Day 4: National Parks by Bree

From the excitement of seeing the national monument Mount Rushmore, we decided to discover other national monuments. In total there are 180 national monuments within the United States. In the United States Arizona and California are tied with the most national monuments with 19 and the next leading state with the most is New Mexico at 13. These national monuments allow for history to be kept and allowed for generations years from now to still be able to cherish and realize the importance of this history.

From this research on national monuments we happened upon the Devils Tower Monument. Devils Tower is a striking natural rock formation, rising dramatically 867 feet from its base to the summit. Recognized as the first U.S. national monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, it is known for its distinctive columnar basalt structure formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. The tower holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for up to 25 Native American tribes, who regard it as a sacred site. Today, Devils Tower attracts rock climbers, hikers, and tourists, offering breathtaking views and a unique glimpse into both geological history and Native American heritage.
The three possible ways as to how Devils Tower could have formed.

In our luck of stumbling upon Devils tower, we were able to meet Mr. Brian Cole. Mr. Cole is a park ranger who talked to us about what park rangers are and how he became a park ranger. A park rangers uniform in the current day and time was morphed from the original park rangers which were called The Calvary to better suite the needs for the current time. Mr. Cole discussed how he himself was a seasonal park ranger for 6 years before he reached his now permanent position. When it comes to jobs within the park service and it can range from maintenance to law enforcement even campground hosts. Therefore, from his perspective of events through his life it allowed for another idea as to what careers we may be able to pursue in the future.
